Scarborough is one of the most historic and culturally rich destinations on the Yorkshire coast. Its story stretches back thousands of years, shaped by Viking settlers, medieval kings, Victorian holidaymakers, and the rise of the modern seaside resort. Today, Scarborough’s history is woven into its landscapes, architecture, and world‑famous attractions — making it a fascinating place to explore for visitors of all ages.

Early Origins: Scarborough Before the Middle Ages

Archaeological evidence shows that the Scarborough area was inhabited long before written history. Prehistoric settlements, Bronze Age burial sites, and Roman activity all point to Scarborough’s long‑standing importance as a coastal stronghold.

⚔️ The Viking Founder: Thorgils Skarthi

Scarborough’s recorded history begins with the Vikings. Around 966 AD, a Norseman named Thorgils Skarthi founded a settlement he called Skarthaborg — the origin of the modern name “Scarborough”.

The Vikings recognised the strategic value of the headland, using it as a defensive base and trading point. Although the early settlement was later destroyed, the name and location endured.

Scarborough rose to prominence in the medieval period, becoming one of the most important towns in northern England.

The Great Scarborough Fair

From the 13th century, Scarborough hosted the world‑famous Scarborough Fair, a 45‑day trading festival attracting merchants from across Europe. It became so renowned that it inspired the traditional folk song “Scarborough Fair”.

The Birth of the Seaside Resort

Scarborough made history again in the 17th century when natural mineral springs were discovered in the South Bay. This led to the creation of Scarborough Spa, attracting visitors seeking health benefits from the waters.

By the Victorian era, Scarborough had become Britain’s first true seaside resort.
